Coaching addresses one of today's biggest challenges. If you're like many Americans, you know what you need to be doing to reach your health goals, but you have trouble actually doing those things consistently. Perhaps you’ve had difficulty making lasting change with weight, eating, exercise habits or stress level because you keeping trying in the same old way – relying heavily on willpower, making unrealistic resolutions or plans, feeling motivated only some of the time and getting off track easily. Maybe you feel you have tried everything out there, and nothing lasts. Or, maybe you simply feel overwhelmed by too much health and fitness "advice" and you're not sure what to believe. You can learn to master your wellness for good. Imagine the way you will feel when you are living the healthy lifestyle you desire. You’ll have more energy, so your work and home hours will be more productive and enjoyable. You’ll feel self-confident and proud of your accomplishment, and you’ll be a positive role model for those you love. You’ll be in control of your own physical and emotional wellbeing. Most importantly, you’ll know you’ve done your part to ensure a long, healthy life. Sound impossible? It’s not. Coaching is an innovative, proven approach. In order to change your lifestyle for good, a variety of issues must be addressed on psychological, emotional and behavioral levels; willpower alone will not cut it! You need to find ways to sustain your motivation for change, create accountability that keeps you on track, set appropriate goals that inspire you, develop strategies to overcome your personal challenges and gain the confidence that you can master your wellness once and for all. Through thoughtful inquiry, collaborative problem-solving and goal-setting, and safe, honest dialogue, your coach will help you create lasting change in whichever areas of wellness are important to you. Specifically, coaching will help you: • find and sustain motivation for change • free yourself from the “quick fix” mentality • develop a realistic plan of action that you can maintain over time • implement strategies to overcome your obstacles • create and be accountable to weekly goals • develop personal insight and new thoughts processes that will allow you to sustain change after the coaching is over Here's an overview of the coaching relationship: 1. Prior to the first coaching session, the client answers a questionnaire to provide information about key issues, such as: goals, motivators, past attempts at change, currently lifestyle and other health concerns. 2. During the first 60-minute coaching session, coach and client discuss the client's wellness vision, motivators, obstacles and strategies. The client clarifies priorities, commits to change and identifies realistic three-month and first-week goals. 3. In each subsequent 30 to 45-minute coaching session, weekly or as needed, client and coach review the progress toward last week’s goals, develop a solution if an obstacle arose and agree on a set of goals for the upcoming week. 4. After a few weeks of coaching sessions, most clients begin to notice a difference in how they feel and look, and their motivation to continue change often increases. In addition, they begin to experience a greater sense of control and self-efficacy. 5. Often, during the second and third month of change, clients may discover one or more obstacles that could potentially block success. Coaches and clients work hard together to overcome barriers through brainstorming, discussion and planning. 6. At the end of three months, or earlier if necessary, coaches and clients review three-month goals and decide whether continued coaching is appropriate. If clients feel continued support is right, coaching sessions continue at whatever frequency clients desire, such as once every other week or once per month for as long as necessary. |
